My home town.....

Its the place where I spent most memorable time of my life.. Yes my childhood. SHIMOGA a wonderful place with nice people. Its a district head quarters with pleanty of schools, temples, festivals, trees and off course potholes.

This place is described as 'Malenadu' in kannada.... meaning place with lots of hills, green and prosperous. Place is surrounded with enormous flora. River Tunga flows thru the city. A dam is also constructed for this river at Gajanooru 15Km from Shimoga. There are lots of temples in this city and small festivals are held often. Processions of deity are taken during these festivals. People offer their prayer when the palanquin passes thru the streets. One interesting festival is 'Seetha kalyana'. This is the celebration of Lord Rama's wedding. It’s a great event that continues for 5 days. Once in every 3 years there will be Maariamma Jatre... Goddess Maari is believed to be the protector of the place. Mother Maari's idol will be made of wood, which is kept in the temple for 3 days. During these days animal sacrifice are made to impress the deity.

Farming is the main business here. People grow areca in the farms surrounding Shimoga. All India areca mandi merchant head office is in Shimoga. This place is the highest producer & supplier of areca in India.

Though this city radius is hardly 6Km you will find plenty of city bus. No it’s not a matter to be happy. Want to know why? Then travel in those buses. Since for every 5min there is a bus to any other place, we can find one bus running behind the other. With very small population how can these buses run full? So they move also very slow!!!!! Slow meaning even bullock cart can overtake them. It’s a pain to travel in these buses as they take hell lot of time just to cover a distance of 4-5Km. But I have to admit no one can drive fast in the city filled with potholes. These potholes are so huge people even planted saplings in them to mark protest against the feckless government.

Actually speaking there is nothing great about this place.... but I don't know why I love it so much......
